About this book

This book is a collection of creative writings by Zambian women who participated in the Kasaka Creative Writing Workshop, held in August 2025 along the banks of the Zambezi River in Lower Zambezi.

During the workshop, the women were challenged to think deeply about one seemingly simple question:

"What if I were called something else?"

At first, this might sound like a question about changing your name from Mary to Grace, or from Chanda to Mwila.

But the writers explore something much deeper.

They examine how names influence our identities, relationships, cultural beliefs, family expectations and how society sees us.

The book explores the idea that a name is not always just a name. Sometimes it carries a family's history, a person's identity, a cultural expectation or even a painful memory.
