What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device when you visit a website. It lets the site remember your actions and preferences between pages and visits. Similar technologies such as local storage work in comparable ways, and where we say cookies in this notice we mean those too.
Our position, stated plainly
We do not use analytics, advertising or third-party tracking anywhere on the platform. Nothing here follows you to another website, and nothing is sold or handed to an advertiser.
Everything the platform stores in your browser is either needed for the service to work or is something you asked for by using a feature.
The cookies we use
The platform uses essential cookies to keep you signed in, remember basic account state and protect important actions. These are needed for the service to work.
The registration security question uses a short-lived HTTP-only cookie. It cannot be read by page scripts and is removed after the registration attempt or when it expires.
Everything else the platform keeps in your browser is there because you used a feature: your shopping basket, a coupon code you typed in, a book proposal you have not finished yet, whether the chat panel is open, and the reference for a live chat you started so the reply is still waiting when you come back.

- Security token — protects forms and important actions for the session.
- Registration check — supports the registration security question and is short-lived and HTTP-only.
- Cookie choice — records your answer to the cookie notice for six months.
- Shopping basket — holds what you have added.
- Coupon code — keeps a code you typed in.
- Unfinished proposal — saves a book proposal in progress.
- Chat panel state — remembers whether chat is open.
- Chat reference — links you to a conversation you started.
- Hosting and authentication — keeps the service running and secure.
Your choice
The cookie notice records your answer for six months and then asks again. You can change your answer at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page. If this notice changes materially we ask again straight away rather than relying on an answer you gave to something else.
Essential cookies cannot be switched off, because without them you could not sign in, hold a basket or complete an order. If we ever introduce anything that is not essential, we will ask before setting it, not afterwards.
Managing cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you see, delete and block cookies. Blocking all cookies will prevent sign-in, the basket and checkout from working here. Instructions are in your browser's help or settings menu.
