101 Years After the War: Memories and Family Stories of World War One in Zambia

The Zambian tradition has a way of recording and keeping collective memories of events that affect the whole community in the local lore. In the same way, the memory of the First World War has been kept through local traditions such as songs, dances, naming systems of people and places as well as family stories. This book records stories from seven families; these being descendants of those who participated in the First World War. The stories, from different parts of the country explore the various Zambian traditions of recording historical events such as the First World War. Academic records are referenced to authenticate the events and facts in the stories. It is hoped that using this method, the experiences and effects of the war on Africans, which are not widely recorded in academia, can trigger broader interest and begin the process of investigation into this field of history.
